the button that's connected to the contraption

All ears are twitching, all hearts are drumming

The air is thick with anxious expectation
The ceiling drips with chilly condensation

What will happen when finger and button collide?
What will be the outcome when these things coincide?

The downward motion of the finger
Is so slow it doesn't seem to move
But only linger
In a state of unconsummated aboveness
reminiscent of the sterile yearnings
of the loveless

Maybe there's a little man
inside the contraption

Maybe there's a ring on the finger
that glows when it's time for action

Maybe the room's been at the
bottom of the sea this whole time

Maybe the contraption was discovered
in an abandoned salt mine

Maybe the button was never meant
to be pressed
